The patches in the medium shade were a repair Guy made and then the center (knee) ripped out. So I put a piece of dark stretch denim behind it and basted it by hand to hold it in place. Now I'm doing embroidery over it. But because the iron on patches are so thick I have to use the punch method which is slow and hard on the fingers. If it had been plain worn denim I could have just used a running stitch all from the front side. Stopping for the night before my fingers get too sore.</span><br />

<br />
I decided today was the day to work on a weaving project I started a few weeks ago and then got sidetracked. The reason I'm putting it here instead of my usual craft blog is I realized how much of it is re-purposed.<br />
<br />
First off I made the loom out of a used wooden picture frame following the directions from a library book. If you don't have an old frame laying around, they are often available for under $5 at thrift stores. Just pick a sturdy one and make sure to get some sandpaper to smooth it so it doesn't snag your yarn.<br />
<br />
I often buy yarn at thrift stores but it is usually unused yarn left over from someone's knit or crochet project. Well, I scooped up some bags of yarn balls without being attentive, and found out it was yarn that had been unraveled from a sweater or something. It was fuzzy and had lost all it's stretch. In other words, it would be a bad idea to try to knit or crochet with it again. But I couldn't think of any reason I couldn't weave with it, and in fact it is working out perfectly. So I'd say the yarn was about $2.00. I did buy a new roll of cotton thread for the warp. That was about $2.50. Then I needed a shuttle so I cut the handle off of a wooden spatula. The spatula was actually new, but a whole bag of them was about $5.00...so it was a dollar.<br />
<br />
In other words, this whole project is going to cost me under $7.00 and the frame is reusable for another weaving project. Sweet.<br />
<br />

I eventually found the craft section. I picked up black and white yarn for a mime hat I'm going to weave. I dug around and also found 2 bags full of buttons for $2.50 each. So many crafts need buttons. Everything from doll and teddy bear eyes to hanging signs to crazy quilts. Some projects take quite a lot of buttons, like those dolls with the button arms and legs.<br />
<br />
I also got some wide tooth combs and Afro picks. No, I'm not planning on growing an Afro anytime soon, but they will be great to tamp down yarn in my weaving projects. <br />
<br />
Anything you get from a thrift store extends its life and keeps it out of the landfill just a little bit longer. One of his teacher's taught him to make chainmaile during detention. Another teacher invited him to show his wares in an art show featuring art made from discarded materials. He did and someone bought his tunic and coif for $750. So we dismantled the broken washing machine in order to save the metal drum inside to use as a fire
ring for desert bonfires. I won't lie to you and say it was easy because
there were many fasteners inside that were not obvious when we started.
In the end we resorting to pounding with a hammer, using a dremel tool
and whatever else it took to get it apart. We also rescued the big plastic
tub just in time for me to plant tomatoes inside it. The rest of the parts will go to the trash day at the local store. I'm sure a clever person could cut out the metal and use it for art or Steampunk gear or something. <br />

And the leather pouch is made from scraps that might have been thrown out but I purchased them before the store closed and now I can use them in this cool project. I try to use every scrap for something. Even if I wind up shredding it, the pieces can be used as stuffing for mailing, much like bubble wrap. Printer paper that has misfires gets quartered and used for scrap paper. If you have a big stack of old flyers, the local print shop can cut the whole stack and glue the ends to make notepads out of it. Remember each paper was once a tree probably, so why waste it? If you make paper, you can toss many papers into the blender to be made into new sheets of paper. It's a good use for junk mail. Thanks to email, the gobs of junk mail finding their way through mail slots aren't as bad as they used to be.
<br />
<br />
Or staple the papers together and let your kids practice their drawing on the blank side. I do believe drawing increases intelligence. Learning to transfer 3D images to drawings teaches us how to analyze the world around us.

I ask myself 'can this be used for something else without too much hassle?' Usually the answer is yes. Just today I read how to make an embossed aluminum picture frame out of soda cans. I'll have to try that one when I get a chance. Tubs and juice cans can be used for all kinds of projects from candle and soap molds, to bins to organize nuts, screws and small art supplies like jewelry findings.
<P>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We now use tote bags for every store, not just the grocery store. They are great for used bookstores where the wimpy plastic bags and the sharp corners of hardcover books don't work well together. Take the grungy ones to hardware stores and auto supply stores to carry dirty auto parts or tools that need a part.
<P>
Now I want to get or sew some inexpensive tote bags and then screen print them with our business names. That way when we tote things around we are advertising our own businesses and not Food4Less or something. The hardest part about using tote bags is remembering to take them from the house to the truck, then from the truck to the store. Sadly, though there was a momentary burst of people using the tote bags at our local markets, now no one seems to be doing it but us. Sad indeed.Fayme Zelena Harperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01438019336287576300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666002771458225858.post-49265928236545341772012-03-02T21:47:00.000-08:002012-03-02T21:47:51.060-08:00Cardboard and Soda CansDo you save cereal boxes and use the cardboard for other things? It's handy for making templates and for paper crafts. I always keep some of it around. I'm making a tutorial on magic wands with a cardboard base. I plan to use a cereal box for the project. I also use the boxes soda cans come in. Or once I have 12 or so I flatten them, tie them together and set them on top of the dumpster and the cardboard collectors come by and grab them. We have one guy that picks up cardboard and another that picks up metal, and dumpster divers pick up cans about 10 times a day. It's not legal in my city to dumpster dive and the last fine I heard of was $75. But I am glad someone is using the cans and maybe living off of the money so they don't starve to death. Our apartment complexes have no recycle bins and I think that is just wrong. The houses intermixed with them do get to recycle from home. Hopefully Anaheim will remedy that sometime in the near future.

In this heat my ankles have been hot and swollen, and I was just saying to my boyfriend how I should get a kiddy pool, just to keep cool in the backyard and soak my tired feet in.<br />
So he said, "Take that one that's been blocking our gate for a week." At first I was disgusted. He said, "Big deal, just clean it and you are good to go."<br />
It was still there this morning after the trash crew came and left. So I booted it over the gate, scrubbed it with a brush I use to clean the truck, and now I have a way to keep my feet cool and happy. And I saved one more thing from the landfill, at least for now. <br />

Oftentimes the universe plops what we need right in front of us, and we don't recognize our good fortune. I'm sure buying a pool would have cost me $20 or so. Then I used gel medium under and over bits of tissue paper to cover all the white areas. The tissue paper was saved from my daughter's baby shower. After that was dry, I cut a stencil out of graph paper, and used it to air brush a leaf and butterfly design over the tissue on the front. I'm letting it dry over night under weights and in the morning I'll write the text part. So far so good.<br />

Some of the things I've done with t-shirts in the past include making a beach blanket (cut the best front or back with a 12" x 12" cardboard template and stitch together), t-shirt yarn (which I used to crochet a bath mat), and rag curlers. This time though I took the simple route and just cut a shirt into shop rags which I'll use for applying dye, dusting before adding a finish coat, or to clean up spills.<br />
<br />
There are many books and websites devoted to making new fashions from old t-shirts, so think twice before you pitch those shirts away.Fayme Zelena Harperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01438019336287576300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666002771458225858.post-2446418600930027692011-01-05T04:07:00.000-08:002011-01-05T04:07:02.924-08:00Wasting ThingsThis is my reply to a blog post I read on Livejournal:<br />
<br />
I've always been a hoarder, maker, and re-user of things. In fact I really had to bite my tongue when my boyfriend's mom said she had just thrown away all the decorative pinecones she bought for Christmas. There are so many uses for pinecones. And don't get me started on what a waste cutting down trees for xmas is. So I vowed this year to always plant a tree for Christmas. I'm going to plant a pomegranate tree this year as soon as I can afford one. Maybe they will grow from the seeds. I'll have to find out.<br />
Our idiot landlord chopped down the only tree that shaded 4 apt. yards. Why? Because the neighbors whined and moaned that they had to rake up leaves. This summer they will fry and spend a fortune on air conditioning because their apts. are no longer shaded. But the owners of the building that complained the most don't even live here. They'll be in their posh home in San Diego under their air conditioners while we are all melting.<br />
I just bought a new webcam when I had a perfectly good one already. Why? Because the old one is obsolete and won't work with this computer. Such a waste. At least now the Goodwill's take electronic waste (anything with a cord or batteries). You can't legally throw those things in a dumpster in CA, but every day when I drive down the alley I see TV's and monitors and radios and all kinds of that stuff by the dumpsters. So at least in Anaheim it's being ignored. People are too lazy to even walk across the street to the Goodwill to dump their old electronics. How sad is that?Fayme Zelena Harperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01438019336287576300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-666002771458225858.post-52780677093471642742011-01-01T14:38:00.000-08:002011-01-01T14:40:37.347-08:00Arrow Hook or Rake Made From a Broken ArrowIf you are an archer, you know that sooner or later every arrow you have is either going to get lost or broken. Some can be fixed and some can't. So my boyfriend and his friend Sal started making arrow hooks out of broken arrows to be used to retrieve arrows lost in deep grass or up in trees or shrubs. I wrote a bit on it here: <a href="http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/40734/master/1/?page=1">http://paleoplanet69529.yuku.com/topic/40734/master/1/?page=1</a><br />
<br />
One of the arrow hooks is made out of a trashed aluminum arrow. The other one was made from bamboo.<br />

Then I can repurpose things into other things. Like old veils that are too worn to use can be gleaned for fabric to make hair scarves, belly covers, and sleeves.<br />
Belly dancing coins can be cut off and added to new costumes. Broken barrettes can be repaired or the beads and trim can sometimes be re-used.<br />
<br />
Bras that no longer fit can get new straps and trim. And any damaged beadwork that can't be fixed can be cut apart and added to hats or turned into appliques.<br />
<br />
Sometimes dancers have swap meets and trade their old costumes with other people. Since I didn't have a blog on that topic I made one. I'm not new to re-purposing by any means. I'm a child of the '70's. My mother had five kids and we all lived on a serviceman's income. Everything got passed down the line from child to child, so I learned how to alter clothing early on and embellish it with embroidery or paint or beads. Sometimes I feel my business card should say Embellisher.<br />
<br />
